Supervisors OK $25,000 for Animal Shelter Audit
Two months after the Riverside County Grand Jury delivered a 28-point attack on the county-operated animal shelter, the Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to pay the Humane Society of the United States $25,000 to conduct an audit of the operation.
The grand jury found that animals were being improperly euthanized at the shelter, and also cited evidence of lax procedures for securing hypodermic needles, maintaining fleet truck air-conditioning systems and accounting for donations.
In addition, it cited county records showing that 14% of the nearly 22,000 animals impounded each year could not be accounted for.
