Woman Tries to Qualify

Isabelle Beisiegel, a rookie on the LPGA Tour this year, will try to qualify Tuesday at Industry Hills for the Nissan Open. Beisiegel, 25, is part of a field of 213 trying for four spots in the tournament that begins Thursday at Riviera Country Club.

Mike Weir is the defending champion in the $4.8-million event, with $864,000 going to the winner.

The last woman who made it through qualifying and played in a PGA Tour event was Babe Didrikson Zaharias in 1938.

Last year, club pro Suzy Whaley earned a spot in the Hartford event through a PGA of America title but didn’t go through qualifying. Annika Sorenstam played at the Colonial in Fort Worth and Michelle Wie played at the Sony Open in Honolulu last month, both on sponsor’s exemptions.

Wie also tried to qualify for the Honolulu tournament a year ago and failed.

Beisiegel tried to qualify for this week’s Buick Invitational but shot an 80 and didn’t make it. Last year, she fell short in Monday qualifying for the Canadian Open and two Nationwide events.

The Canadian, who lives in Norman, Okla., was co-medalist at the LPGA final qualifying tournament in her third attempt at qualifying school.

Also trying to earn one of the four spots in qualifying at Industry Hills are Mac O’Grady, Barry Jaeckel, Robin Freeman and Dennis Paulson.
