Timberwolves Make Move on Front-Running Kings

The Minnesota Timberwolves believe this is their year to get out of the first round of the playoffs -- and beyond.

Finishing atop the Western Conference standings would give them a great start, which is why beating the Sacramento Kings was so important.

Kevin Garnett had 22 points and 24 rebounds for the Timberwolves in a 92-75 victory over the Kings on Thursday night at Minneapolis in a matchup of the West’s top teams.

Minnesota (39-15) used a 60-34 rebounding advantage to beat Sacramento (38-14).

“We’re trying to get that No. 1 seed,” said Sam Cassell, who had 18 points. “We’ve got to continue to do what we can to get that seed.”

Peja Stojakovic had 15 points for the high-scoring Kings, held to a season low in points.

“Unfortunately, everyone took turns missing shots,” said Coach Rick Adelman, missing top big men Brad Miller (foot) and Chris Webber (NBA suspension).

Minnesota’s defense had a lot to do with that.

“When you hold a team 30 under its average, you’re doing something right,” Minnesota Coach Flip Saunders said.

Wally Szczerbiak, sidelined since training camp by a sore foot, had six points in 16 minutes.

“I can’t remember the last time we played like that,” said Bobby Jackson of the Kings’ 33.7% shooting, including 29.4% in the first half. “And we still had a chance to win the game. That’s the scary thing.”

Philadelphia 112, Seattle 101 -- Allen Iverson had 40 points to help the 76ers end a five-game road losing streak. Ray Allen led Seattle with 31 points.
