Weekend box office

Share

When an Adam Sandler movie in its second weekend leads the box office and four new films fail to ignite, the biggest news may be that on Sunday “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” passed $1 billion worldwide, becoming only the second movie to cross that threshold, after “Titanic’s” $1.8 billion. New Line reported the “Rings” trilogy has grossed $2.8 billion worldwide to date.

Among new films, Disney’s “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen,” starring Lindsay Lohan as the title character, made a less than grand entrance in second place, and the tepid fourth-place showing for “Welcome to Mooseport” might prompt Ray Romano to get off the fence about returning to his successful TV sitcom on CBS, “Everybody Loves Raymond.”

“Eurotrip” was something of a bummer in fifth place; maybe the “Road Trip”/”Old School” team collaboration will make up the difference in video.
