Campbell Soup Co., the world’s biggest soup maker, said second-quarter profit rose 1.7% as more promotions increased sales of soups and vegetable juices. Higher costs will lower profit this quarter, the company said.

Net income increased to $235 million, or 57 cents a share, from $231 million, or 56 cents, a year earlier, the Camden, N.J.-based company said. Sales climbed 9.5% to $2.1 billion, with about half the gain attributed to the declining value of the dollar.

Campbell shares rose 4 cents to $28.24 on the New York Stock Exchange.
