Few experiences have been weirder in Trevor Ariza’s freshman season at UCLA than when USC Coach Henry Bibby called to him from the sideline early in the second half of the Trojans’ overtime victory over the Bruins on Wednesday night.

“We’re going to stop you,” Bibby said.

Ariza masked his surprise well. “No you’re not,” he replied.

Bibby and the Trojans got the last word, but Ariza left an indelible impression, equaling his season high with 24 points.

He scored 15 in the first half, cooled off, then scored the first five points of overtime, giving the Bruins a lead they held until Desmon Farmer got hot in the last minute.

“I’d rather score two and win than score 24 and lose,” Ariza said.

USC prevailed despite making only six of 28 three-point shots.

It was the worst long-range performance by the Trojans since early nonconference losses to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (three of 22) and Nevada Las Vegas (one of 22).
