Council OKs Settlement Over Convention Protest

From Times Staff Reports

The City Council has voted to pay $875,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by 70 bicycle protesters arrested during the 2000 Democratic National Convention.

The protesters claimed that they were arrested in downtown Los Angeles without probable cause, and that in any case they should have been cited and released rather than held in Los Angeles County Jail for as long as 48 hours. The council vote took place Wednesday.
