From Times Staff and Wire Reports

County health officials Friday expanded the closure area for Dana Strands and greatly increased their estimate of the amount of sewage that spilled into the ocean from a break in the South Coast Water District’s collection system.

From the northern point of the beach to 1,000 feet down the coast from Selva Ramp is now closed to swimming, surfing and diving. The spill is now estimated at more than 27,000 gallons, according to the county Environmental Health Division.

The closure will remain in effect until tests show that bacteria have returned to acceptable levels.
