NFL Network, which has been available only on DirecTV since its launch Nov. 4, has made its first major cable deal.

A carriage agreement between NFL Network and Charter Communications is expected to be announced today. It is probably the most significant carriage agreement between a sports network and a major cable operator in years.

Charter, which serves 533,000 of the Los Angeles market’s 2.9 million cable households, will begin rolling out NFL Network to customers with digital systems in February. Of the 6.4 million households nationwide served by Charter, 42% are equipped with digital systems.

That’s more than any other major cable operator. A source said NFL Network will likely be placed on digital basic by most Charter systems.
