Toronto Maple Leaf forward Mats Sundin was suspended for one game for throwing his broken stick into the stands.
Sundin was about to take a shot when the stick snapped in the second period of Toronto’s 2-1 victory Tuesday night over the Nashville Predators.
He blindly backhanded the broken shaft into the lower tier at Air Canada Centre. No one was injured, and Sundin was not penalized. He wound up with assists on Bryan McCabe’s goals in the third period.
“Pitching your stick up into the stands should be a game misconduct,” Nashville Coach Barry Trotz said.
