Police shot and seriously wounded a man suspected of killing a 19-year-old in an apparently gang-related attack Tuesday night in the Crenshaw district.

Officer Jason Lee, an LAPD spokesman, said two males confronted Daniel Santoyo in an alley about 10 p.m. Frank Lazos, 27, shot Santoyo in the head with a large-caliber revolver, then fled with a 14-year-old youth, Lee said. Santoyo died at the scene, near Palmyra Road and Hillcrest Drive in Southwest Los Angeles.

Three police officers responded after receiving a radio call about an armed man. They heard gunshots as they arrived, Lee said, and saw Lazos and his companion leaving the alley.

The officers pursued Lazos on foot and in a squad car. During the pursuit, Lee said, Lazos fell and, while on the ground, fired several rounds at police. Lee said the officers fired back, hitting Lazos multiple times. He was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and is expected to recover.

Police had initially reported, erroneously, that officers fired a fatal shot at the scene.

Officers arrested the second suspect.

Later Tuesday night, another man was shot to death in South Los Angeles. About 11:20 p.m., police found Kelly Angle Hillman, 38, lying on the sidewalk in the 1800 block of West 67th Street. Police said he had been shot from behind multiple times. Neighbors called 911.

On Wednesday at 9 p.m. an unidentified man was killed and three others were injured in a drive-by shooting near Esmeralda Street and Huntington Drive in El Sereno, Lee said.
