Anaheim Is Up Next After Controversy

Rough riding in supercross may be exciting to the spectators, but it can be dangerous for competitors, so when it began to get out of hand, AMA Pro Series officials announced that a crackdown was in order.

Kevin Windham, whose victory last week in the THQ AMA supercross in Phoenix was his first since 2000, was the first to feel the officials’ wrath.

The Honda rider from Centerville, Miss., was allowed to keep his win but was docked 10 of his 25 points for knocking David Vuillemin off course in the first lap.

Windham came off the line first, winning a $1,500 bonus, but Vuillemin passed him in the first turn.

When Windham tried to regain the lead on the second turn, the two collided, knocking the French rider to the ground and into last place.

Series manager Steve Whitelock imposed the 10-point penalty, which was appealed by Windham and the Amsoil-Chaparral Honda team.

The loss in points left him third behind Australian Chad Reed and teammate Mike LaRocco.

Vuillemin remounted to finish seventh and is fourth in points.

All will be back tonight for Race 3 of the 16-race season at Angel Stadium.

And for the first time at Anaheim in several years, authorities announced Friday that tickets remain available for the show.

In the 125cc western regional event, Kawasaki’s Ivan Tedesco will be going for his third consecutive win.

“What can I say,” the 22-year-old from Albuquerque said, “I am undefeated this year. I have won every one of my heat races and main events. I have had great starts so far, and that has been the key.”
