From Times Staff Reports

A homeless man’s arboretum on the Santa Ana River bank was saved from being bulldozed Wednesday after a county water agency heeded emotional pleas from his supporters.

Richard Dumke’s garden will remain, said the Orange County Water District board of directors, but the trees will be thinned and a fence will be removed to allow greater public access.

The 60-year-old former biologist had urged the district not to destroy the garden but adopt it and use it as an example of a water conservation project.
