San Diego Padre first baseman Phil Nevin underwent arthroscopic surgery on torn cartilage in his right knee and was put on the 15-day disabled list.

“I feel 100% better today than I did when I left yesterday just because it was locked yesterday,” Nevin said. “It’s just amazing what they can do now.”

Nevin was hurt breaking out of the batter’s box after hitting a single in Sunday’s 7-1 win over Kansas City.

Nevin was replaced on the roster by outfielder Xavier Nady, who was recalled from triple-A Portland.

Melvin Mora was put on the 15-day disabled list by the Baltimore Orioles, who figured the third baseman needed at least two weeks to recover from a hamstring injury.

His absence was easier for the Orioles to tolerate because of the fine play of David Newhan, who was hitting .417 and playing a solid third base since joining Baltimore on June 18.

Putting Mora on the disabled list freed a spot on the 25-man roster for pitcher Dave Borkowski.

For Curt Schilling, starting next week’s All-Star game would be a bonus -- a $50,000 bonus.

Under the contract he negotiated in November when he was traded from Arizona to Boston, Schilling receives a $100,000 bonus for his selection to the AL squad. The deal calls for the six-time All-Star to receive an additional $50,000 if he starts.

In all, 43 players earned $2.05 million in bonuses. Six players will receive $100,000 each: Vladimir Guerrero of the Angels, Schilling, Barry Bonds of San Francisco, Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees, Ivan Rodriguez of Detroit and C.C. Sabathia of Cleveland.

Cleveland activated outfielder Ryan Ludwick and catcher Josh Bard from the disabled list and sent them to triple-A Buffalo.... Cincinnati recalled catcher Corky Miller from triple-A Louisville to fill the roster spot vacated by Casey.
