“I think art is done by spiritual means,” artist Tony Peters says. “And the merit of a painting can’t be defined. It’s all about what the spirit adds to the color and line that appeals to the soul.”

Peters’ rooftop view of downtown Los Angeles will be part of “Spiritual Spectrum: Paintings and Sculptures by the California Art Club,” on display through Aug. 27 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. The exhibition, designed to draw the community into the cathedral, consists of more than 80 “inspired” paintings and sculptures on display in four of the cathedral’s chapels. Organizers say they hope it is the beginning of a series of temporary exhibitions in the building.

“We’ve installed an art display system used in many museums and galleries so that we can hang things unobtrusively in the chapels,” said Pamela Ludwig, executive director of development for the cathedral. “We hope to form partnerships with many arts organizations

Ludwig credits Gayle Garner Roski, chairwoman of the cathedral’s arts and furnishings committee and a Los Angeles cultural affairs commissioner, with arranging the exhibition.

“These events get people to see a city through the eyes of art,” said Roski, an artist and member of the California Art Club’s board of directors.

Artist and sculptor members of the California Art Club, which was founded in 1909 by plein-air artists in Southern California, were invited to submit works for the exhibition. Pieces were then selected by the cathedral’s arts and furnishings committee. The club’s 3,000 members include professional artists, art teachers, art historians, collectors and patrons of the arts.
