U.S. Gets Even With Poland

Carlos Bocanegra scored late to give the United States a 1-1 tie against Poland on Sunday in an exhibition game in front of 39,000 in Chicago.

Bocanegra headed Landon Donovan’s corner kick in the 88th minute past goalkeeper Artur Boruc and forward Ireneusz Jelen.

Jelen had an opportunity to stop the ball, but couldn’t control it at the goal line.

Piotr Wlodarczyk scored in the 76th minute. U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard blocked Marcin Burkhardt’s cross attempt, but allowed the rebound to roll to Wlodarcyk. After evading Howard, his shot hooked inside the right post.

Boruc stopped a penalty kick by Brian McBride in the 11th minute.

Copa America

Brazil, helped by a hat trick from Adriano, beat Costa Rica, 4-1, at Arequipa, Peru, and joined Colombia in the quarterfinals of the Copa America. Alex set up three of the goals as Brazil moved to the top of Group C with six points from two matches.

Paraguay missed a chance to advance when it tied Chile, 1-1, and dropped to second in Group C with four points. Chile stayed alive in the tournament with one point.

MLS

The Chicago Fire and New England Revolution played to a 1-1 tie in front of 39,529 at Soldier Field. Chicago is winless in its last three games, but is one spot ahead of last-place New England in the Eastern Conference.

Manuel Quaresma, the head of the Portuguese Soccer Federation, has died of an undetermined illness, the Lusa national news agency said. He was 49. The cause of his death Saturday night in Lisbon will be determined after an autopsy. He was the assistant director of the recently concluded Euro 2004 tournament.... Florentino Perez, the businessman who loaded Real Madrid’s lineup with such superstars as Ronaldo and David Beckham, won re-election as team president by a landslide. He received 91% of the votes cast.
