Weekend box office

The tally for “I, Robot” came in a tad under initial projections but not enough to deny Will Smith a new personal best for opening weekend box office. The 20th Century Fox film took in $52.18 million, slightly lower than Sunday’s reported estimate of $52.3 million, but Smith’s previous high mark was the $52.15 million for the July 3-5, 2003, debut of “Men in Black II” -- a difference of roughly $30,000 that’s almost too close to call.

Fox’s “DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story,” meanwhile, became the ninth movie of the year to surpass $100 million at the box office.
