Weekend box office

“The Bourne Supremacy” took in a hefty $52.5 million over the weekend, a record opening for a Matt Damon film. And though “Fahrenheit 9/11” dropped out of the top five for the first time since its June 23 release, it managed to cross the $100-million mark and make feature-length documentary history. “Catwoman,” meanwhile, was a disappointment.

Overall, this weekend’s box office was down almost 6% from the same stretch a year ago, when five films -- “Spy Kids 3D: Game Over,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” “Bad Boys II,” “Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life” and “Seabiscuit” -- each earned more than $20 million. That’s partially because the top four movies last weekend were competing for the same “action” crowd, says Exhibitor Relations’ Paul Dergarabedian.
