It’s Time for Saratoga

Share

One week after Del Mar began its 65th season, the best race meet of the summer commences today in upstate New York.

Guaranteed to feature an abundance of full fields with high-quality horses and the deepest jockey colony in the country, Saratoga begins its six-week stand with a 10-race card.

The main event is the $150,000 Schuylerville, the first of 30 graded stakes to be run between today and Sept. 6.

A Grade II for 2-year-old fillies at six furlongs, the Schuylerville attracted 11 entrants, including Broadway Gold, who has won her first two starts.

Owned by Mrs. E. Paul Robsham and trained by Stan Hough, Broadway Gold, a daughter of Seeking The Gold, beat maidens by 11 lengths May 12 at Belmont Park. Returned more than six weeks later in the Astoria, she won by three lengths as the 6-5 favorite. Jerry Bailey rode her in both of those wins and he has the mount again today.

With a wet track a distinct possibility today, Dressed For Success has to be considered a contender.

A daughter of Tricky Mister trained by Patrick Biancone, she was a 5 1/4-length winner in her debut over a muddy surface at Monmouth Park two weeks ago.

Race of the day: Wind Water, who broke his maiden in a minor stakes at Pleasanton on July 4, is the 5-2 morning line choice against seven other California-bred 2-year-olds in today’s $125,000 Graduation Stakes at Del Mar.

One for the road: Falcon Eagle ran well after a poor start in her debut July 14 and can break her maiden in today’s 10th at Santa Rosa. Chance Rollins will ride the 3-year-old Native Prospector filly in the $8,000 claimer at six furlongs.
