Sean Burroughs hit a two-run single and Ryan Klesko had a two-run double in a five-run sixth inning, and the San Diego Padres went on to defeat the San Francisco Giants, 9-4, Wednesday night.

Terrence Long went three for four with two doubles and a triple, and scored three runs to improve to 12 for 23 (.522) against the Giants this season. Khalil Greene had two hits, two runs batted in and scored twice, and Ramon Hernandez hit a two-run homer for the Padres.

San Diego improved to 9-3 against its division rival and moved a game ahead of the Giants for second place in the National League West, 2 1/2 games behind the Dodgers, who lost to the Colorado Rockies, 5-4.

Brian Lawrence (11-7) gave up a run and two hits in six innings before he was pulled for a pinch-hitter. He won for the first time since July 5 after going 0-2 in three starts.

With the bases loaded, Burroughs greeted reliever Wayne Franklin with a two-run single up the middle, which deflected off the glove of shortstop Neifi Perez.

Klesko then doubled in two more and scored on a double by Phil Nevin to make it 8-1.

Giant starter Dustin Hermanson (4-4) gave up six runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings with five strikeouts and three walks. He dropped to 0-2 in three starts and has given up 13 earned runs in 15 innings against the Padres this season.

In the sixth, Greene made a diving stop on a one-hop grounder to start an inning-ending double play with Barry Bonds on deck.

Hernandez staked the Padres to a 2-0 lead in the second when he hit his eighth homer of the season, one more than Padre catchers combined for last season. He connected on a 3-and-2 pitch after Greene hit a one-out single.

Greene then had an RBI single in the fourth, driving in Long, who led off with a double.

The Giants closed to 3-1 in the fifth, when A.J. Pierzynski doubled with one out for the first hit off Lawrence and scored on a two-out single by Perez.
