Long Beach Advances, 8-4

Long Beach State used the long ball to defeat Stanford, 8-4, Sunday to win an NCAA Division I regional in front of 2,209 at Stanford’s Sunken Diamond.

The 49ers (39-19) advanced to their second consecutive super-regional, and will play host to Arizona in a best-of-three series beginning Friday night at Blair Field.

The Wildcats (33-24-1) advanced with a 7-6 victory over Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. It’s their first regional title in 11 years.

John Bowker hit a home run and drove in three runs, and Troy Tulowitzki and Sean Boatright also homered for the 49ers, who are seeking their first berth in the College World Series since 1998.

Tulowitzki hit his third homer in five at-bats in two days against the Cardinal, a two-run shot in the first inning. Boatright and Bowker each hit a two-run homer in the third as the 49ers took a 6-1 lead.

Cesar Ramos (11-4) yielded three runs -- two earned -- and seven hits in 7 1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out seven.

David O’Hagan (6-2) lasted only 2 2/3 innings, giving up six runs and three hits -- all homers. It was the first start of the season for O’Hagan, the Cardinal closer.

Chris Carter homered and drove in two runs, and John Mayberry Jr. homered for Stanford (46-14), which failed to win a regional for the first time in six years.

Long Beach State won its third in a row after starting the regional with a seven-game losing streak, its longest since 1988. The 49ers were eliminated from the postseason by Stanford the previous two years.

Stanford, ranked first or second in the nation most of the season, was 10-8 in its last 18 games.

The top-seeded Cardinal, which stranded 11 runners, had won eight consecutive elimination games in regional and super-regional play.

Florida 11, UCLA 0 -- The top-seeded Gators (43-20) routed the third-seeded Bruins (35-29) in front of 2,341 at SBC Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City to advance to the super-regional round, where they will play in-state rival Miami.

Florida broke the game open in the second inning by scoring seven runs to take an 8-0 lead.

That was more than enough support for junior right-hander Tommy Boss (4-5), who limited the Bruins to four hits -- three of them singles. He did not issue a walk and struck out six.

Jonathan Tucker and Ben Harrison each drove in three runs.

Daniel Miltenberger (3-2) gave up four runs and four hits in one-plus inning.
