Bonds, Palmeiro Play Long Ball

Barry Bonds hit his 675th homer to help the San Francisco Giants beat the Baltimore Orioles, 9-6, in 11 innings in the first game of a day-night doubleheader Saturday in Baltimore.

In the second game, Larry Bigbie singled in the winning run in the 12th inning to give the Orioles a 5-4 victory.

Rafael Palmeiro hit two homers for Baltimore in the opener, giving him 537 to move past Mickey Mantle into 11th place on the career list.

It was only the third time in baseball history that two players with 500 homers connected in the same game. Willie Mays and Ernie Banks did it on June 17, 1970, and Mays and Hank Aaron both homered on May 8, 1971.

In the second game, Melvin Mora drew a one-out walk from Scott Eyre (0-1) in the 12th and Matt Herges entered to face Miguel Tejada, who was hitless in 10 at-bats for the day until he singled.

After Javy Lopez struck out and Palmeiro received an intentional walk to load the bases, Bigbie singled to center to win it.

John Parrish (5-2) pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the Orioles, who avoided falling five games under .500 for the first time this season.

Seeking their 17th win in 24 games, the Giants managed only five hits. Bonds tied a career high with five walks, four of them intentional.

In the first game, Bonds hit his 17th homer of the season and capped a four-run 11th with an RBI single.

Cleveland 8, Cincinnati 7 -- Coco Crisp’s three-run double with two out in the eighth inning helped the Indians come from behind again to hand the Reds their fifth consecutive loss.

Ken Griffey Jr. remained two shy in his pursuit of 500 career homers, and the Reds’ slide continued as they failed to hold a 5-2 lead after five innings for the second night in a row. He went hitless in four at-bats.

New York Yankees 3, San Diego 2 -- Gary Sheffield put the Yankees ahead with a two-run single in the sixth inning, and Bret Prinz pitched out of a jam in the seventh to preserve the victory at Yankee Stadium.

Sheffield’s single to center off reliever Scott Linebrink gave New York a 3-2 lead and sent Padre starter Dennis Tankersley (0-3) to his eighth consecutive loss since his only major league win on May 26, 2002, at Milwaukee.

Chicago White Sox 10, Atlanta 8 -- Frank Thomas homered twice and Carlos Lee extended his career-best hitting streak to 26 games to help the White Sox win at Chicago. Lee went three for five with an RBI and Juan Uribe had a three-run double for the White Sox, who had lost six of eight. Lee lined a single just out of the reach of second baseman Nick Green in the third inning to keep his streak alive.

Detroit 6, Florida 2 -- Nate Robertson (5-3) pitched four-hit ball for eight innings at Detroit and Ivan Rodriguez had two hits and an RBI against his former team, lifting the Tigers to their fourth win in a row.

Robertson allowed the first two runners to reach base in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but got out of the jam each time by getting a double play. He has won his last three decisions.

Tampa Bay 10, Colorado 7 -- Toby Hall and Tino Martinez hit consecutive homers in the seventh inning to lead the Devil Rays at St. Petersburg, Fla. John Halama (2-1) earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief for the Devil Rays, who equaled their best record after 59 games at 25-34.

Matt Holliday hit his first career grand slam during Colorado’s six-run sixth inning that gave the Rockies a 7-5 lead. Colorado has lost seven in a row and 19 of 23.

Minnesota 6, Philadelphia 1 -- Carlos Silva (7-3) struck out a career-high eight in seven strong innings against his former team in Minneapolis. The Twins scored four runs with two out in the second inning against Phillie starter Kevin Millwood (4-5). The Phillies’ Jim Thome hit career home run No. 399, his 18th of the season, to start the seventh.

Kansas City 4, New York Mets 3 -- Angel Berroa’s RBI single scored the winning run from second base with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Right fielder Gerald Williams made a strong throw to the plate, but pinch-runner Wilton Guerrero was safe when catcher Vance Wilson had trouble handling the throw and tagged Guerrero with his glove, but the ball was still in his other hand.

Texas 7, St. Louis 2 -- Hank Blalock hit his second career grand slam and drove in five runs, and Ryan Drese (3-3) pitched seven strong innings at Arlington, Texas. Drese (3-3) won for the first time since beating Tampa Bay on May 5. He gave up two runs-- one earned -- and four hits.

Seattle 3, Montreal 0 -- At Seattle, former Dodger Hiram Bocachica hit his first home run in the majors in two seasons, and Jamie Moyer (5-2) yielded six hits in seven innings to win his fourth consecutive decision. The 41-year-old left-hander has a 1.60 ERA in his last five starts.

Milwaukee 7, Houston 4 -- Keith Ginter’s go-ahead, two-run double highlighted a five-run fifth inning at Milwaukee. The Astros’ Jeff Kent went 0 for 4, ending his 25-game hitting streak.
