LOOKING BACK

Washington, with a 75-62 victory over Stanford on Saturday in Seattle, defeated a No. 1-ranked team for the second time in 28 tries. The Huskies’ other victory over a No. 1-ranked team came on Feb. 22, 1979, when they defeated UCLA, 69-68, at Seattle.

A reserve guard on that Washington team was current Husky Coach Lorenzo Romar, who made four of seven shots and both of his free throws for 10 points in 25 minutes against the Bruins that night. Stan Walker scored on a 17-foot jumper over the outstretched arm of James Wilkes with three seconds left to give Washington the victory.

UCLA went on to win the Pacific 10 championship with a 15-3 record and reached the NCAA tournament round of 16, where it was defeated by Mark Aguirre-led DePaul to finish with a 25-5 record. Washington finished 11-16 and tied for eighth at 6-12 in the first season the Pacific 10 had its current school membership.

Romar, who played at Downey’s Pius X High and Cerritos College before his two seasons at Washington, went on to play in the NBA, averaging 5.9 points in five seasons. Romar was an assistant at UCLA from 1993 to 1996, and head coach at Pepperdine (1997 to 1999) and Saint Louis (2000 to 2002).

The Washington coach in 1979 was Marv Harshman, who attended Saturday’s game.
