“Seabiscuit,” Laura Hillenbrand’s chronicle of the famed racehorse, has been selected by Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn for this year’s “One Book, One City L.A.” reading initiative.

The program encourages L.A. residents to read the book during the month of April and then discuss it, either in their own community groups or at events sponsored by L.A. libraries. The Central Library will be publishing a discussion guide to facilitate such meetings.

Previous selections for “One Book, One City L.A.” were Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” in 2002 and Sandra Cisneros’ “House on Mango Street” in 2003.
