County Residents Gave Charity’s 2 Biggest Gifts
SAN DIEGO
The nation’s two largest philanthropic gifts of 2003 were made by San Diegans, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
The estate of McDonald’s heiress Joan Kroc donated $360 million to charity, including $200 million to National Public Radio, the smallest gift to lead the national donors list since it was first published in 1998. Kroc’s $1.5 billion gift to the Salvation Army, the largest single donation ever given to a charitable group, was not included in the 2003 tally because it was announced in January.
Kroc died in San Diego County in October.
The second largest gift donated last year came from Qualcomm magnate Irwin Jacobs and his wife, Joan, who presented $110 million to the UC San Diego School of Engineering.
