Heat Breaks Records Across the Southland, Will Continue
A summer-like heat wave set record temperatures in seven Southern California locations Sunday and is expected to break more records today, according to the National Weather Service.
A high pressure system is lingering above the Southland, sending the mercury soaring in communities from Woodland Hills to Long Beach, which both reached a record-busting 92 degrees Sunday.
The National Weather Service listed the date’s previous high in Woodland Hills at 89 degrees in 1988, and in Long Beach at 84 degrees in 1968.
“It’s not usual this time of year to see such a dynamic weather change,” said Bill Hoffer, a spokesman for the weather service. “It’s due to the changing pressure systems.”
Today’s Los Angeles area temperatures are forecast to be in the 70s at the beaches and in the upper 80s inland.
The weather should begin to cool Tuesday, with partly cloudy skies and highs in the 60s along the coast and in the 70s inland.
Other locations that set records Sunday included Chatsworth at 91 degrees; Pasadena, 89; Burbank, 88; Torrance, 87; and Los Angeles International Airport, 83.
