A ‘Daughter’s’ gifts

Robert HILBURN’S outstanding article on Loretta Lynn [“Mining the Old Passion,” April 18] has reawakened my interest in anything “new” in the music business. At 67, my jaded opinion of music over recent years resulted in no new albums in my music collection, but Hilburn’s inspired article on Lynn will change that.

Of course, Lynn is truly remarkable, but the way Hilburn presented her new album is likewise revealing about himself. I just felt moved both to compliment his cogent and carefully crafted writing, and to thank him for turning my head on to anything new. The photos caught my eye, and Robert Hilburn’s writing caught my mind.

Loretta LYNN is simply a national treasure (and Jack White is becoming one) who has been overlooked in recent years. Most people only know her from the movie “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and couldn’t tell you any song she’s written. This should change all that. Can you imagine a 70-year-old country singing ex-star releasing a new CD produced by maybe the most important person in rock music today? Well, that’s what this is, and let’s hope for the sake of quality music that it gets played on many radio stations everywhere for all to appreciate.
