A 20-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy apparently drowned in a La Puente swimming pool Thursday after inhaling Freon and losing the use of their limbs, sheriff’s officials said.

They were found in the water at 3 p.m. at a home in the 14200 block of Moccasin Street, said Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Garcia.

“It appears at this point they were inhaling Freon from a canister -- apparently it’s a new way to get intoxicated,” Garcia said. “We assume they decided to get into the pool.

“Freon has the effect where limbs no longer become functional after heavy intoxication.”

The victims were taken to separate hospitals where they were declared dead, Garcia said.

Freon is a trade name for any of a series of gases used as refrigerants, solvents and propellants in aerosol products.
