A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy shot and injured a man brandishing a gun Saturday morning in the Athens area, officials said.

Leonard Brown, 26, was a passenger in a gray Nissan sedan that ran a stop sign about 2:10 a.m. in front of two deputies in a patrol car near 119th Street and Berendo Avenue, according to Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Suzuki.

After the deputies stopped the Nissan, Brown got out of the sedan and pointed a handgun at the deputies as he attempted to flee, officials said. One of the deputies fired two rounds and struck Brown in the right arm, Suzuki said.

Brown was treated at a local hospital and arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. Deputies recovered a .45-caliber handgun from the scene.
