Two men were killed and a third critically injured early Tuesday when their car flipped several times in Costa Mesa, authorities said.

Carson Cherico, 21, of Newport Beach, who was driving, and passenger William Dunham, 22, of Costa Mesa died following the 1:40 a.m. single-vehicle crash in the 2300 block of Placentia Avenue.

A second passenger -- Tyler Christie, 21, of Costa Mesa -- was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana in critical condition.

Police say their car was traveling about 80 mph in a 40-mph zone when Cherico lost control and drove over a curb onto the front lawn of a fire station.

The car traveled an additional 50 yards along the sidewalk between two sets of light poles.

After hitting a cable box, tree and a concrete light pole, the car jumped back onto the street and rolled several times before coming to rest upside down in the street.

Several firefighters heard the crash and ran to the scene.

Although a number of alcoholic containers were found in or near the car, police said, they had not determined whether the driver or passengers had been drinking.

The investigation into the crash is continuing.
