2 More Cities OK Tax Hike Request
Two more Ventura County city councils have voted to support placing a half-cent sales tax proposal for highway improvements on the November ballot.
The Simi Valley and Santa Paula councils voted Monday to ask the county Board of Supervisors to put the initiative before voters. Fillmore and Camarillo took the same action last week.
The Simi vote was unanimous. The Santa Paula council voted 2 to 1, with two members absent.
At least half the cities representing half of the county’s population must approve of the tax measure before supervisors can put it on the ballot.
The four cities that have backed the measure so far account for 32% of the population.
The Oxnard City Council was expected to vote on the matter Tuesday night. The Moorpark and Port Hueneme councils will vote today.
If approved by a two-thirds vote in November, the countywide tax will remain in place for 30 years and generate up to $50 million annually for highway and road improvement projects.
