Los Angeles City Council members on Wednesday postponed deciding where to put a new headquarters for the Los Angeles Police Department, saying they still need more information about the costs.

“At this point, I don’t feel a lot of trust in the numbers,” said Councilman Eric Garcetti, who recommended that the city hire an independent analyst to appraise the options.

For months, council members have debated whether to buy part of the Transamerica complex at 12th Street and Broadway for $50 million to use as a temporary police headquarters while a new one is built in Little Tokyo.

But Mayor James K. Hahn proposed in March that the 11-story Transamerica building become the LAPD’s permanent headquarters. The city engineer has estimated a new headquarters would cost about $300 million. Parker Center, the landmark building that houses 1,700 officers, is considered unsafe and too small.
