Two Los Angeles City Council members called Friday for the Police Department to investigate allegations that bandit towing companies have been illegally seizing properly parked cars and intimidating their owners to get money before the vehicles are returned.

Council members Jack Weiss and Cindy Miscikowski sought a report to the council in 45 days.

“I’ve heard disturbing reports that tow trucks are illegally taking cars and demanding outrageous fees to return vehicles to their owners,” Weiss said.
