Bercek’s Victory Helps UCLA Win

Freshman Daniela Bercek battled back from a set down to defeat fourth-ranked and former Bruin Megan Bradley at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, leading ninth-seeded UCLA to a 4-3 victory over unseeded Miami Friday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I women’s tennis tournament in Athens, Ga.

The Bruins (20-7) will play fifth-seeded Clemson (24-3) in today’s semifinals. The Tigers defeated fourth-seeded Washington, 4-3.

UCLA rallied after losing the doubles point and two singles matches to fall behind, 3-2. Junior Sarah Gregg, who like Bercek dropped the first set in her match, evened the match at 3-3 when she beat Staci Stevens, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Freshman Theresa Logar extended her winning streak and clinched top-ranked Stanford’s 4-0 victory over seventh-seeded Duke.

Logar improved her record to 25-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Saras Arasu. The Cardinal (27-0) will play third-seeded Vanderbilt, which defeated sixth-seeded Georgia, 4-1.

Sophomore Andrea Duran homered in the first inning and senior Keira Goerl pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts to give UCLA a 2-0 victory over Louisville in the second round of an NCAA Division I softball regional at UCLA’s Easton Stadium.

The Bruins (41-9) play Alabama (44-18) today. The Crimson Tide advanced with a 10-0 victory over Cornell. Long Beach State (50-12) also advanced by beating Louisville, 3-2, in an elimination game.

Jessica van der Linden pitched a two-hitter and drove in the game’s only run in the first inning to beat Cal State Northridge’s Kia Fennell as Florida State defeated the Matadors, 1-0, in a winner’s bracket game at Tallahassee, Fla.

Northridge then beat Ohio State, 4-2, in an elimination game. The Matadors (35-18) play South Florida today.

Junior catcher Angella Funk’s one-out, bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning gave eighth-seeded Cal Baptist a 3-2 victory over ninth-seeded Oklahoma City in the first round of the NAIA tournament at Decatur, Ala.

The Lancers (44-13) are making their first appearance in the NAIA tournament.

UCLA led top-ranked Duke by three strokes midway through the final round of the NCAA Division I women’s golf championship when play was suspended because of darkness at Opelika, Ala.

The Bruins were six over in a final round that was delayed by lightning for 3 1/2 hours, leaving the them at even par overall. Duke was three over, followed by Oklahoma State at four over.

California’s Sarah Huarte was four under through 12 holes to top the individual leaderboard at 11 under. Oklahoma State’s Karin Sjodin was six under through eight holes, and UCLA’s Susie Mathews was five under through eight.

In the NCAA Division I men’s West Regional at Sunriver, Ore., New Mexico holds the team lead after 36 holes with a six-under 570, one shot ahead of UCLA. The final round is today.

There is a four-way tie for the individual lead among UCLA’s Travis Johnson, BYU’s Oscar Alvarez and Arizona’s Henry Liaw and Chris Nallen at five-under 139.
