It’s surf and turf time, totally

As Greg, the oldest brother and hippest member of “The Brady Brunch,” Barry Williams became an icon of the ‘70s. He grooved to tunes in his cool attic pad. And during those Bradys-go-Hawaiian episodes (which featured a terrifying tarantula and a tiki curse), he got hooked on surfing -- and nearly drowned.

Some things never change. Williams still surfs, hitting the beaches near his home in Malibu in the early morning hours and also vacations in Hawaii, still his favorite cursed surfing spot. He also has a gig as host of the “The Barry Williams Show” on Sirius Satellite Radio’s Totally ‘70s channel (naturally).

Riptide

I’m a big beachgoer. I live in Malibu and I’m on the beach a lot. I surf, bodysurf and jog. I usually head out early on the weekend. I think the best beach for surfing is a tossup between Malibu and the County Line. I like surfing because it’s freedom. It’s a challenge. It’s an ever-changing surface that has to be negotiated. Also, it’s good exercise.

I go to Hawaii to surf and that’s probably the best surfing in the world. They have reef breaks as opposed to point breaks. The waves are generally much farther out in the ocean than here. There’s more than one peak to take off, which spreads the surface out a little bit. The water is a lot warmer and clearer.

I’m also a big tennis player and I’m a member of the Westwood Tennis Team. We play weekend tournaments for the United States Tennis Assn. I joined the team this year and last year they won the local championship. We are tied for the lead right now.

Some of the best courts in town are private courts, but the Westwood Tennis Center is also excellent. The Pacific Palisades has a really nice selection of public courts and Rustic Park in the Palisades is good.

Rembrandt lives

I like to go to Laguna, another beach community. Several times, I’ve gone down to Pageant of the Masters, where they re-create classic paintings onstage completely. They use live actors and models to do it and they are dressed appropriately and they assume the appropriate poses. It’s quite spectacular. It’s done outside in a kind of small Greek theater and it attracts a large crowd.

I also like Vibrato in the Beverly Glen Center in Bel Air. It’s a jazz restaurant. Herb Alpert has money in it. The musicians create a nice ambience. They have really good food. It’s seafood continental. It’s a nice, little local hang.

A short boat ride

I go to Catalina sometimes. It’s fun to go over there on the ship and back. I find it to be a nice getaway from Los Angeles. Avalon is very walkable. Sometimes, I’ll spend a couple of days there. There are good restaurants and good nautical-themed shopping there.

I play golf and sometimes rent a boat for fishing or sightseeing. Generally, I’ll charter a boat and the captain is responsible for finding the hot spots. I fish for enjoyment and I eat what I catch.
