What’s in a Name? Plenty, to Angel Fans

Share

Even after 43 years as Angel fans, with the last 12 years as season-ticket holders, my wife and I would rather drive 90 miles south to San Diego Padre games than gag as the Big A public address announcer blares out, “Here come your Los Angeles Angels” as the team takes the field.

If Arte Moreno persists in his attempts to rename the Angels, his honeymoon period of ownership will come to a screeching halt. Such feel-good measures as lowering beer prices and spending big bucks for free agents will be long forgotten by the Orange County fan base that has stuck with the team through all of the lean years, those who are likely to think twice about flocking to the stadium to see the “Los Angeles Angels” play.

Besides, I’d like to see fans from L.A. try to make it down I-5 on weeknights in time to see the early innings of games.

I find it troubling that Anaheim Angel owner Arte Moreno feels it’s an inconvenience to honor the terms of the lease he acquired when he purchased the ballclub. If Moreno wants to enjoy greater revenue from local broadcasters and national advertisers, the formula is proven and simple: Put a winning club on the field. The rest will fall into place. In the meantime, honor the deal, Arte. The rules were meant for everyone.

Shawn Green qualifies for a trade because he has shown great loyalty to the team, has played through injury, has changed positions to accommodate others, has been a wonderful role model, has been a fan favorite, has hit more home runs in a season than any other Dodger and especially because he wants to remain a Dodger.

If this doesn’t give DePodesta grounds for a trade, I don’t know what does.

In the L.A. Times on Nov. 6:

“Sosa was fined $87,400 (one day’s salary) for arriving late to the Cubs’ final game of the season at Wrigley Field and leaving the game early.”

Arriving late and leaving early is a tradition at Dodger Stadium. Sosa will fit right in!

So the Dodgers are considering trading Shawn Green for Sammy Sosa? Great idea, but don’t stop there. How about Eric Gagne for Troy Percival or Adrian Beltre for, say, Eddie Mathews? Is management nuts?
