George J. Maslach, 84; Former Vice Chancellor at UC Berkeley
George J. Maslach, 84, former vice chancellor for research and academic affairs at UC Berkeley, died Nov. 11 of complications from a stroke at a hospital in Richmond, Calif.
A native of San Francisco, Maslach was the first in his family to graduate from college when he earned his bachelor of science degree from UC Berkeley in 1942. After working at MIT and in private industry for several years, Maslach returned to Berkeley in 1949 as a research engineer. He joined the faculty in 1952.
Maslach was named dean of the school of engineering in 1963, serving in that post for nine years. During his tenure, the college boosted enrollment and surged to No. 2 in the national rankings of engineering schools. One of his major accomplishments as dean was to connect the college with the state’s junior college students.
In 1972, he was appointed the university’s provost for professional schools and colleges. He served as vice chancellor for research and academic affairs from 1981 to 1983.
In 2001, the George and Doris Cuneo Maslach Hall, a campus residence, was named for Maslach and his wife.
