Fiscal Mischief Continues in D.C.

The Bush financial masterminds in [Congress] approved an $800-billion debt-limit increase. When the money is not present, they just raise the amount they can borrow. It is hard to believe more than 59 million people voted for such financial irresponsibility. What makes more sense: pay as you go or spend and charge?

So Congress is anxious to get home for the holidays. After a grueling session during most of which not much was accomplished, [lawmakers ended up] locked in the traditional year-end struggle to see who can fatten up the budget with the most pork. It’s tough work, but someone has to do it. I just wish one of those gutless wonders would stick in an amendment stating that no one in this country should be denied timely, effective medical treatment. Then maybe I wouldn’t have to read in Steve Lopez’s Friday column about the woman whose relatives are hocking their belongings to give her a chance at not dying from cancer.
