Nader Is Back on Key Ballot
The state Supreme Court decided Thursday to put independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader back on the Wisconsin ballot.
The Democratic Party of Wisconsin sued to knock Nader off the ballot, arguing that the longtime consumer activist had failed to meet the minimal standards required to be listed as a presidential candidate.
But the court ruled unanimously that Nader had substantially complied with the state’s requirements and should be on the ballot. The ruling overturned a circuit judge’s decision this week that had knocked him off the ballot.
The court’s decision could have major implications for the presidential race in Wisconsin, one of about a dozen states that could decide the election. Some Democrats blame Nader’s candidacy in 2000 for helping George W. Bush win the presidency, and they fear Nader could again siphon votes away from their nominee, Sen. John F. Kerry of Massachusetts.
