Former Walk-On Could Get a Shot

Senior Benjamin Lorier, a former walk-on and Cal State Northridge transfer, is expected to become the sixth linebacker to start a game for UCLA this season when the Bruins play San Diego State at the Rose Bowl on Saturday.

With junior Justin London hampered because of a high ankle sprain and redshirt freshman Aaron Whittington slowed because of a hip injury, Lorier could start next to junior linebackers Wesley Walker and Spencer Havner.

“You are going to see four or five linebackers in there,” Coach Karl Dorrell said. “You’re going to see a rotation of players in there.”

Dorrell, on freshman defensive lineman Chris Johnson, a former Louisiana prep standout who was projected by many to redshirt this season but may have to play because of injuries and suspension involving UCLA’s defensive front: “He wants to play. It’s the coaches who are not sure if we want to do that. [Johnson] sees this as an opportunity to help the team. We’ll probably head in that direction.”

Senior wide receiver Tab Perry, who has been limited in practice because of a hamstring injury, worked out Thursday and is expected to play Saturday.
