LAPD Officer, Suspect Shot After Car Chase
A police officer’s bulletproof vest prevented serious injury when he was shot by a fleeing car theft suspect, who was critically wounded by police Thursday night.
A woman also was injured. It wasn’t clear whether she was a bystander or was with the suspect.
The shootings occurred after officers had chased the suspect to 8th Avenue and Washington Boulevard, a residential area west of downtown, about 7:45 p.m. He stopped the car and ran, shooting at officers, Deputy Chief Michel Moore said. More than one officer returned fire.
The suspect was in critical condition at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The woman was taken to West Los Angeles Kaiser Hospital. Her condition was unknown. Two bullets struck the officer in the chest, stopped by his bulletproof vest and a can of pepper spray. He was in good condition at Cedars-Sinai.
