Alabama Birmingham Stops Texas Christian

Darrell Hackney threw five touchdown passes in the first half Friday night to lead Alabama Birmingham to a 41-25 Conference USA victory over Texas Christian at Birmingham, Ala.

Hackney, a junior who threw four scoring passes against Army in 2002, completed 15 of 24 passes for 337 yards. He helped Alabama Birmingham (5-1, 3-0) join Southern Mississippi and Louisville as the only undefeated teams in Conference USA.

Brandon Hassell completed 20 of 33 passes for 293 yards and one touchdown for the Horned Frogs (3-3, 1-2).

The Blazers totaled 315 yards and built a 35-14 lead by halftime.

Hackney threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Roddy White on Alabama Birmingham’s second play. Reggie Lindsey caught touchdown passes of 17 and 40 yards, and Cedric Hampton and Norris Drinkard each caught 10-yard scoring passes.

Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, who suffered a concussion last Saturday against Stanford, is expected to play today against Navy.... Iowa running back Marques Simmons, who was arrested Thursday night for driving a moped with a revoked license, will play today against Ohio State. Simmons, who started the season No. 4 on the depth chart, was listed as the Hawkeyes’ starter before the arrest. He moved up the depth chart after season-ending knee injuries to Jermelle Lewis, Marcus Schnoor and Albert Young.

Washington expects receiver Charles Frederick (hamstring) to be close to full strength today against Oregon State, but the Huskies will be without defensive tackle Donny Mateaki (injury to a foot tendon) and offensive tackle Khalif Barnes (broken wrist), both of whom are believed to be out for the season.... Illinois running back E.B. Halsey (strained left knee) is not expected to play today when the Fighting Illini play host to Michigan.... Former Montana State assistant Joe O’Brien, 31, was sentenced to four years in prison for his role in a methamphetamine distribution conspiracy.
