From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger repeated a remark about Native American gambling interests Friday that some tribal groups had called insensitive.

“Read my lips: The Indian tribes with Proposition 70 are trying to rip off California,” the governor said in response to a reporter’s question. “I will say it again and again. The reason they are upset is that the truth hurts.”

The Yes on Proposition 70 campaign condemned Schwarzenegger in a statement. “The governor’s repeated use of racial remarks against Native Americans is wrong and only increases racial tensions in California,” it said.
