A look at the 13 members of the Getty Trust

The J. Paul Getty Trust is a cultural and philanthropic institution devoted to the arts. The 13-member Getty board of trustees meets quarterly; trustees are unpaid. Among their duties: approving acquisitions of artworks costing more than $5 million.

New trustees are nominated by a governance committee that includes board members Lloyd E. Cotsen, Ronald W. Burkle, Ramon C. Cortines, Agnes Gund and Blenda J. Wilson.

The full board elects trustees. The board’s last three meetings have been at the Getty Center, but others have been in New York or London. Members of the board of trustees are:

* John H. Biggs, 68, chairman; joined the board in 1999; lives in New York; retired chairman, president, chief executive, Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association-College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF); director, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.; trustee, Washington University, St. Louis; at-large trustee, International Accounting Standards Board Foundation.

* Lewis W. Bernard, 62, vice chairman, joined 1998; lives in New York; retired chief of finance, administration and operations, Morgan Stanley & Co.; chairman of the board, American Museum of Natural History, New York; trustee, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

* Louise H. Bryson, 60, vice chairman, joined 1998; executive vice president for distribution and business development, Lifetime Entertainment Television.

* Ronald W. Burkle, 51, joined 2001; founder, managing partner, Southern California-based Yucaipa Companies investment firm; former supermarket magnate (Ralphs, Food4Less, Alpha Beta); ranked No. 92 on the Forbes 400 list, with an estimated net worth of $2.3 billion; collector of Old Master, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings and drawings; director, KB Home.

* Ramon C. Cortines, 71, joined 1996; Los Angeles-based education consultant; former interim Los Angeles Unified School District superintendent; former chancellor, New York City public school system; advisor to former U.S. Education Secretary Richard W. Riley; former superintendent of schools for Pasadena, San Jose, San Francisco.

* Lloyd E. Cotsen, 75, joined 2002; L.A.-based collector, philanthropist; retired president, chief executive, Neutrogena Corp.

* Barbara G. Fleischman, 80, joined 2000; New York-based collector; with her husband, donated large private collection of ancient Greek and Roman art to the Getty Museum in 1996.

* Agnes Gund, 66, joined 1994; New York-based philanthropist; former president, Museum of Modern Art, New York.

* Barry Munitz, 63, joined 1998; president, chief executive, J. Paul Getty Trust; chancellor, California State University, 1991 to 1997; director, KB Home and Sallie Mae Corp.

* Luis G. Nogales, 61, joined 2000; managing partner, Nogales Investors equity investment firm; former chairman, chief executive, Embarcadero Media; former president, Univision Communications; director, KB Home.

* Steven B. Sample, 63, joined 2004; president, USC; member, National Academy of Engineering and American Academy of Arts and Sciences; wrote “The Contrarian’s Guide to Leadership.”

* Blenda J. Wilson, 63, joined 1993; longest-serving board member; lives in Massachusetts; president, Nellie Mae Educational Foundation; former Cal State Northridge president.
