Long-Range Wireless Chip Delivered by Intel

Share

Intel Corp. said it had provided customers with a chip that handles long-range wireless communications from up to 30 miles away.

The communications chip, code-named “Rosedale,” is designed for the long-distance wireless technology known as “WiMax,” Paul Otellini, Intel’s chief operating officer, said on the first day of the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco. WiMax allows isolated communities, remote businesses, farms and vacation resorts to gain high-speed access to the Internet.

The Santa Clara, Calif., company had previously said it would make such chips available this year, with products coming to market next year.

Otellini reiterated that timeline Tuesday and said WiMax would be an option in wireless laptop computers, though he did not identify specific customers that were using the Rosedale chips.
