When rock was young
Call it livestock meets Woodstock. When the Los Angeles County Fair opens Friday, music devotees will be able to get a heaping helping of pop history along with their deep-fried Oreos, mac-and-cheese on a stick and midway rides.
The exhibition “The Beat Goes On: The History of Popular Music” is billed as the “largest collection of memorabilia, traveling exhibits and interactive musical experiences ever assembled in Southern California.”
Included is the second coming of Ken Kesey’s psychedelic bus, Furthur, as well as a display from the Honky Tonk Hall of Fame & Rock-n-Roll Road Show. Oh, and the Monkeemobile.
Among the artifacts are Bob Marley’s Bible and Patsy Cline’s boots, vintage posters from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, concert photographs and, from the Experience Music Project museum in Seattle, exhibitions on Jamaican music and hip-hop culture. Also from Seattle: a collection of early photos of Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and the Beatles.
Fairgoers can also hop on a replica of the 20-foot keyboard from the movie “Big.”
