Plan Addresses Infant Mortality

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a plan to combat a sharp rise in African American infant mortality in the Antelope Valley.
In April, a county report found that the black infant mortality rate in the Antelope Valley was 32.7 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2002, more than twice the rate among African Americans countywide.
Among other things, the plan aims to increase insurance coverage for postpartum women and increase home visits for pregnant women, new mothers and their babies.
