Designs on the Future Should Be Balanced

In the story “Bus Tour Peels Away L.A.’s Prevailing Myths” (Sept. 15), Norman Klein’s design students are laudably implored to think of design as being “about engaging the confusion of the modern world” and “about trying to mold the future.” But a key missing ingredient in the students’ indoctrination is the instillment of self-appraisal.

Don’t go trying to mold the future unless your models are truly worthwhile. The last century saw many needless bloodbaths erupt over theories and dogmas that their adherents absolutely believed in. All propaganda must be taken with a grain of salt -- and sober judgment.
