USC quarterback John David Booty has not thrown a ball in practice in nearly a month because of an elbow injury and appears to be on track to redshirt this season.

“We have got to determine whether this injury is one that will keep him out for the whole year,” Coach Pete Carroll said Thursday. “It might.”

Booty, a sophomore from Louisiana, was No. 2 on the depth chart when he sustained a bruised nerve in his right elbow when he was hit during practice Aug. 18. He sat out the first two games and will also sit out Saturday against Brigham Young.

Carroll said he hoped that Booty would be able to resume throwing during the Trojans’ off week after a Sept. 25 game against Stanford.

Booty said that once he was cleared to throw, it would take him a week or two to get his arm back into shape and his timing down. He also said that he had not recently discussed redshirting with Carroll or offensive coordinator Norm Chow.

Carroll said senior Matt Cassel would be the first quarterback off the bench against BYU.
