New SpongeBob to come in 2005

The hugely popular yet, to many, utterly incomprehensible animated series “SpongeBob SquarePants” will return to Nickelodeon with 20 new episodes, starting in 2005.

The surreal series about the titular sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea has been among the top-rated kids’ shows for the last three years. But for all the show’s appeal, only 60 episodes have been produced, and only six originals have aired in the last two years. “SpongeBob” premiered in the summer of 1999. An original episode will also air Oct. 11.

“SpongeBob” creator Stephen Hillenburg and crew have been focusing lately on the Nov. 19 release of “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie,” one of Paramount Pictures’ big holiday offerings.

Scarlett Johansson, Alec Baldwin and Jeffrey Tambor join the voices in the movie.

Hillenburg will give up direct control of the show on the new episodes, handing the reins to Paul Tibbitt, who directed the last three seasons.

The original voice cast -- will be back.
